My wife & I were about to have our second baby. I wanted to make sure our first daughter had something special. She was really into fish at the time. So I made her a twin-sized blanket for her bed with crocheted fish, waves & a star fish. I knew making animals was going to be hard, but it took about three tries before I got a design that looked right. With a bright red border, the blanket really stands out.

My wife's sister & husband was about to have a baby. They clearly needed something that would be unique. My wife made a baby hat while I made the blanket. I'm particularly proud of the chevron pattern. It was the first time I had attempted a complicated crochet pattern. The hat came out pretty amazing too (especially considering how hard hats can be.

What do you do with a couple miles worth of left over yarn that doesn't match or coordinate with anything? You turn it into a crochet quilt. This project took months. And months. And months. I think it was about 10 months all together. The result though was pretty eclectic and very cozy for those cold winter nights. We still use this blanket from time to time. The blanket is 100% triple-crochet. It has an amazing texture.

My wife's cousin & husband got pregnant. I wanted to make them something, but a baby blanket was out of the question because they were sure to get one from a friend. So, I made matching scarves to match the baby's winter coat. The yarn was super soft.
My wife & I like to go rock climbing. She needed a good bag to carry her harness, chalk bag, etc. This bag was an interesting challenge. I wanted to crochet it (I don't know how to knit), but crochet stretches pretty easily. If the bag was going to hold anything of any significant weight, it would need some support. I purchased a woven nylon strap and sewed it into the base of the bag and around my wife's shoulder. I then crocheted around the strap to make it match. To give the bag a nice interior, I sewed in a lining. I also purchased extra strong magnets to secure the flap of the bag so it wasn't just loose.
Overall, the bag came out really nice and very sturdy.

Some winters in the Nation's Capitol area are colder than others. We had a particularly harsh winter one year where we got literally feet of snow. The media referred to it as "snowmageddon." I made my wife some crochet mittens. They were very warm.
